Scinaia / Nemastoma (Red Finger Algae)
A reminder in red: algae ID is always an adventure.
What You Get
You will receive one portion of Red Finger Algae from our offshore diving collections. Will it be Scinaia? Nemastoma? They are closely related genera in the order Nemaliales, similar in form and care, which is why they are commonly confused in the hobby. What you get depends on what we have on hand! Color varies from dusty rose to deeper pinkish red. Under bright aquarium lighting a deep red is possible!
Why It Is Algaesome
- A red accent with a more unique shape for your reef.
- Soft, fleshy texture with delicate flattened or tube finger-like fronds that hold shape in flow.
- A natural snack for herbivores, especially tangs and angels, making it both décor and enrichment.
Sizing & Availability
Most pieces measure 4" tall and 2" across. Growth form varies by species, depth, and current. This a one of the more rare and unique algae we offer. We seem to start finding small groups of it in mid-late fall, when temperatures dip below 80.

A Note from the Collectors
These two genera share the same order and often look nearly identical in the field. Scinaia complanata forms thin, gelatinous, delicate branches and stays compact, usually collected around 40–50 feet. Nemastoma varies widely across the world but our local Gulf species grows into tidy rose-red clusters. Because both forms behave the same in aquaria and are notoriously difficult to separate without microscopy, we offer them under a single listing. Expect variation in shape and color based on where each specimen grows.
We ship via 2-Day service on Mondays and Tuesdays only to ensure specimens arrive healthy. You’ll receive a notification with tracking information as soon as your order ships.
