Coralline Algae: Fuzzy Tufted

Description

Jania spp. — Coralline Algae: Fuzzy Tufted

A tufted twist on classic coralline.

What You Get

Coralline Algae: Fuzzy Tufted is an articulated (jointed) red coralline that grows as delicate, upright, branching tufts rather than a hard crust. Each colony is built from tiny calcified segments that give it a soft, fuzzy appearance while still feeling firm to the touch. Color ranges from soft pink to rosy red with pale tips, and individual branches may show subtle white or chalky highlights as they calcify.

Why It Is Algaesome

  • Not your usual coralline: Instead of coating rock as a flat crust, or becoming staghorn coral-like, Jania grows upward in fine, branching tufts that look like tiny shrub tips.
  • Delicate texture: Adds a feathery, three-dimensional accent to rockwork, macro gardens, and reef scapes where most coralline is purely background.
  • Calcareous and reef friendly: As a calcified red algae, it thrives in tanks with strong calcium and alkalinity, right alongside stony corals and other calcareous macros.
  • Low on the menu: Generally not a preferred food source for most herbivorous fish and invertebrates, so it often persists where softer reds are grazed down.
  • Natural hard-bottom feel: Common on shallow hard bottom, reef edges, and rubble in the Caribbean and Gulf, it brings that same “busy” reef texture into your aquascape.

Sizing & Availability

Each portion is a small, cluster of Jania, usually 2 to 3 inches across. Branch thickness, density, and overall shape vary naturally from specimen to specimen and species to species; some form tighter tufts, while others appear more open and branched.

In the wild, colonies can spread across rock or rubble and form small patches over time. Availability is occasional and may fluctuate with tides, water clarity, and seasonal growth patterns in shallow coastal habitats.

A Note from the Collectors:
Every macroalga we offer is hand collected, acclimated, and observed by our team before shipping. While we carefully try to remove other algae, sponges, and tiny hitchhikers, it is possible that a few goodies from the reef may tag along. It is a natural part of receiving genuine wild collected specimens.

Many species may arrive paler or whitish in color. This is completely normal. Macroalgae shift their pigments inward during transport to protect from light and stress; color returns within a few days under good aquarium lighting and flow.

We ship via 2 Day service on Mondays and Tuesdays only to ensure specimens arrive healthy. You will receive a notification with tracking information as soon as your order ships.
