Red Razor Algae

Description

Bryothamnion triquetrum — Red Razor Algae

When your aquascape needs a little edge.

What You Get

Red Razor Algae is a distinctive red macro that forms dense clumps of knobby, triangular branches. Each frond is stiff and rigid, with short alternating side stalks that give the plant a natural but sharp look rather than “plastic.”

In the wild, Bryothamnion triquetrum is found attached by a single holdfast to hard bottom in shallow, high-energy habitats. In the aquarium, it makes an excellent focal macro for areas of stronger flow, especially in mixed-macro displays and macro-forward reef systems.

Why It Is Algaesome

  • Bold, architectural form: Triangular, knobby branches create a rigid, bushy structure that stands out from softer, flowing reds.
  • Holds its shape: Naturally stiff and upright, it maintains a clean form even in higher flow and doesn’t collapse into a tangle.
  • High-flow specialist: Comes from shallow habitats with strong current, making it ideal for well-circulated tanks and “energy zones” in your aquascape.
  • Not on the menu: Generally not palatable to most herbivorous fish and invertebrates, so it often persists where other reds are grazed down.
  • Looks best in cooler reef temps: Tends to thrive and show its best color in systems kept toward the lower end of reef temperatures.

Sizing & Availability

You will receive an attached clump of Bryothamnion triquetrum, typically around 4–5 inches tall with a branching spread that fills out into a compact bush. Individual plants can grow larger over time.

Because this species is collected from shallow Atlantic and Caribbean habitats in the 6–15 foot range, availability varies with temperature, tides, and water clarity.

Traits

Color Deep red to burgundy
Ease Moderate
Classification Red macroalgae
Nutrient Uptake Fair
Availability Cooler months
Use Display
Lighting Moderate
Flow Moderate-High
A Note from the Collectors:
Every macroalga we offer is hand collected, acclimated, and observed by our team before shipping. While we carefully try to remove other algae, sponges, and tiny hitchhikers, it is possible that a few goodies from the reef may tag along. It is a natural part of receiving genuine wild collected specimens.

Many species may arrive paler or whitish in color. This is completely normal. Macroalgae shift their pigments inward during transport to protect from light and stress; color returns within a few days under good aquarium lighting and flow.

We ship via 2 Day service on Mondays and Tuesdays only to ensure specimens arrive healthy. You will receive a notification with tracking information as soon as your order ships.
